Beware of “The Curse of Knowledge”

Have you ever heard of “the Curse of Knowledge?”

Basically, if you’re really good at something, it can be difficult to remember what it feels like not to know what you understand really well.

For example, let’s say you’re a golfer and you’ve been playing your whole life; you may find it difficult to teach someone else how to play the game — to explain different techniques that you do naturally, to a novice or a beginner.

It's important to overcome the "curse of knowledge" to ensure your message is clear.

The easier your content is to understand, the more effective it will be, the higher your engagement is.

So how can you overcome the curse of knowledge?

Here are 4 quick tips:

1. Make sure each line relates logically to the proceeding one so that understanding can build naturally.

Before → after
Cause → effect

2. Always ensure your piece has a main throughline: What’s the main point being made here? Don’t try to deliver multiple main points. Stick to one!

3. Do a jargon check. Any technical terms or acronyms that may be unfamiliar to your audience should be omitted from the final piece.

4. Send your work to colleagues, editors, or friends and family. Ask them: Does that make sense? Was anything confusing?

Explain your point in simple, easy to understand language. Try not to over-explain anything either.

The best creators say just enough to let people think they’re coming up with the ideas themselves. Good luck!
