The Rise of Yapping (And How to Do It Well)
This new style of content looks deceptively simple, but it’s perfect for grabbing attention in a short amount of time.
It’s the “yap.”
Yapping videos are on the rise because they appear casual and they're AI-proof.
ChatGPT can't yap. Claude can't yap. No AI can replicate the specific, messy, real-life moment you just experienced. And these raw experiences are exactly what make yapping so powerful.
The goal is to make someone watching think, “oh my god, someone finally said it or I need to send this to my friend right now.” You're not just talking at people. You're articulating something they felt, but couldn't put into words or haven’t said out loud yet.
The Biggest Misconception About Yapping
Here's what people get wrong: they think the creators who do this well are just winging it.
It looks off-the-cuff because it’s filmed casually (in the car, mid-thought, minimal editing). But the best creators aren’t winging it—they’re relaxed on camera and intentional about what they’re saying.
So before you hit post on your next yap, ask yourself, “So what?”
What's the takeaway? What do you want the person watching to walk away feeling? If you can't answer that clearly, it's probably worth reframing before you record.
What Makes a Yapping Video Actually Work
Once you've nailed your “so what,” here's what makes a yapping video stand out:
One clear point. This is your through-line message. You don't need to be clever. Pick one idea and drive it home.
The story behind the yap. Where did this idea come from? What happened that made you want to yap about it? Tell the story, the example, or the real-life moment. It’s what makes people feel like it matters.
Your energy. People can feel your conviction through a screen. Yapping works best when you actually care about what you're saying. Yap about things that genuinely fired you up or made you think.
A clear stance. Your perspective and stance should be loud and clear. The best yappers aren't necessarily trying to change anyone's mind. They're sharing what's true for them and offering a new lens to look through.
How to Actually Start (and Get Better)
Yapping is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger you get. Here’s how to start:
Document everything. Keep a running notes tab on your phone — moments, reactions, conversations, anything that made you feel something. The goal is to capture how you felt in the moment, before you forget.
Set aside time. Once or twice a week, open your notes, pick one or two topics from your list, and write about them. What's my main point? What's the story behind it? Why does it matter? Then open your camera. and let it roll.
Practice without the camera first. On your commute, on a walk, while you're making coffee, and just yap. Work through your thoughts out loud. Notice what lands, what feels energetic, what you keep coming back to. The camera can come later.
Build it into your routine. Pick one recurring thing you do every week — a coffee shop visit, a walk, a grocery run — and take 2 minutes right before it to make it into your dedicated yap session. You don't have to post it. The whole point is repetition and practice.
Edit for the juice. Let yourself record for 5, 10 minutes or however long it takes to get your point out. Then go back and find the best 60 seconds. This is not going to be hyper-edited. You're looking for the most alive and clear parts of your video.
Nail your delivery. Don't let it become one long monologue. Take intentional pauses. Let your sentences vary in length. Those changes in rhythm will keep people’s attention.
The Part Nobody Talks About
Here's something that you may not expect: yapping will probably feel uncomfortable at first if you’re not used to it.
Because it's raw and there’s minimal editing, it could feel more vulnerable than your other content. But that discomfort is actually a good sign.
The more you practice through that uncomfortable feeling, the more natural it becomes. That is exactly what makes yapping work. And the more you post, the more data you have to reflect on and improve with.
So pick up your phone and start yapping.
